The Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Tae D. Johnson has announced his retirement from the agency. He has been with ICE for 30 years and was selected by President Biden to be Acting Director.

Over 1.5 million applicates from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela have apply for the Biden Administration’s U.S. Migrant Sponsorship Program, the problem is there is only a cap of 30,000 monthly allowed. This process is overwhelming caseworkers at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Title 42 ends this Thursday, May 11th, ending the public health order making it illegal for immigrants at the border to seek asylum. This order was created during Covid Pandemic by the Trump Administration. The CATO Institute, an American Think Tank, feels that the policy backfired and caused more illegal crossing. The American Immigration Council (AIC) has released all fifty states and the District of Columbia, for a total of fifty-one updated state-by-state fact sheets highlighting immigration data and facts. These fact sheets highlight the demographic and economic impact of Immigrants in each state.

With national immigration policy being discussed, we thought that it would be a good time to provide some statistics on the Immigrant population in the United States as provided by this AIC research. Once a week we will be posting a blog with information on three states at a time. This week we will highlight; Oklahoma, Oregon and Pennsylvania!

The AIC has compiled research which shows that Immigrants are an essential part of each of these states’ economy, labor force and tax base. As our economy continues to grow, Immigrants and their children are a growing economic and political force as consumers, taxpayers and entrepreneurs. As United States economic continues to grow, immigrants and their children will continue to play a key role in shaping the economic and political future of each of these states.

As of May 12th, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will no longer require COVID-19 vaccination or proof of that vaccination for non-U.S. travelers entering the United States! This is the result of the Title 19 travel restrictions being lifted by Presidential Proclamation signed by President Biden.

The Department of Justice, Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) announced on Wednesday, April 24th the appointment of Sheila McNulty as the new Chief Immigration Judge. Judge McNulty has served EOIR since 2010 and has been part of the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge leadership for the past 6.5 years. EOIR Director David L. Neal stated, “Judge McNulty brings to this critical leadership position an incredible depth of experience and both the skills and desire to improve our immigration court system,”.
