On Thursday, September 21, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Afghanistan for 18 months, from November 21, 2023, through May 20, 2025! Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Today’s announcement to extend and redesignate TPS for Afghanistan allows us to continue to offer safety and protection to Afghan nationals who are unable to return to their country,”.

Background:

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced-on Friday, September the 8th that they were extending the re-registration period for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from 60 days to 18 months for several countries. The countries included in the TPS extension are El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Sudan. On Tuesday, September 5, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of South Sudan for 18 months, from November 4, 2023, through May 3, 2025! Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Through the extension and redesignation of South Sudan for Temporary Protected Status, the United States will continue to offer safety and protection to South Sudanese nationals who may not be able to return to their country due to the ongoing armed conflict and humanitarian crisis,”.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Under this extension and redesignation, we will continue to offer safety and protection to Sudanese nationals until conditions in their home country improve.”

On Tuesday, June 13th, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced cancellation of the Trump Administration’s Termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Designations for El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua. This decision now extends TPS designations for 18 Months for current beneficiaries only!

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has published a notice in the Federal Register extending and redesignating Somalia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 more months, from 3/18/23 through 9/17/24. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Through the extension and redesignation of Somalia for Temporary Protected Status, the United States will be able to offer safety and protection to Somalis who may not be able to return to their country, due to ongoing conflict and the continuing humanitarian crisis,”.

On Monday, December 5, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were extending and redesignating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Haiti for 18 months, from February 4, 2023, until August 3, 2024. This designation of TPS is based upon ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary conditions in Haiti making return un-safe. Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “The conditions in Haiti, including socioeconomic challenges, political instability, and gang violence and crime – aggravated by environmental disaster – compelled the humanitarian relief we are providing today.”

Background: 

On Monday, October 21st, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported the designation of Ethiopia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. Individuals eligible for TPS under this designation must have continuously resided in the United States since October 20, 2022. 

Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Ethiopian nationals currently residing in the U.S. who cannot safely return due to conflict-related violence and a humanitarian crisis involving severe food shortages, flooding, drought, and displacement, will be able to remain and work in the United States until conditions in their home country improve.”
