Immigration Policy Center Releases Updated State-by-State Fact Sheets (2015)

The Immigration Policy Center (IPC) has released all fifty states, the District of Columbia and the United States (Overall), for a total of fifty-two updated fact sheets with accompanying info graphics and other details. These fact sheets highlight the demographic and economic impact of Immigrants, Asians and Latinos in each state. The Immigration Policy Center (IPC) is the research and policy division of the American Immigration Council (AIC).

As Washington D.C. continues the discussion of Comprehensive Immigration Reform, we thought that it would be a good time to provide some statistics on the Immigrant population in the United States as provided by this IPC research. Once a week we will be posting a blog with information on three states at a time. This week we will highlight; Nevada, New Hampshire & New Jersey.

The monthly Visa Bulletin has changed. The bulletin now summarizes the availability of immigrant numbers during the reported month for: “Application Final Action Dates” (consistent with prior Visa Bulletins) and “Dates for Filing Applications,” indicating when immigrant visa applicants should be notified to assemble and submit required documentation to the National Visa Center using Consular Processing (outside of the US) or file on their own with USCIS Form I-485 (within the US).

MVP Law Group would like to remind everyone to watch President Obama’s final State of the Union Address. He will be speaking Tuesday Evening at 9:00 PM EST LIVE from the U.S. Capitol. The White House has suggested that the focus of the address will be the President’s reflection on the last seven years as President! We will be listening, especially for any information regarding Immigration Reform.

Note: Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina (R-SC) will deliver the Republican Address to the Nation following the President’s State of the Union Address.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a News Alert (12/29/15) stating that the statutory maximum of 10,000 U nonimmigrant petitions (U Visas) for FY2016 has been reached. This is the 7th year in a row that this maximum cap has been reached before the end of the fiscal year. USCIS will continue to accept U visa petitions! USCIS will process them in the order received at the beginning of FY2017, which starts October 1, 2016, at that point the U Visa cap of 10,000 will open again.

The U nonimmigrant status (U Visa) is set aside for victims of crimes who have suffered substantial mental or physical abuse and are willing to assist law enforcement and government officials in the investigation or prosecution of the criminal activity. Note that a U-Visa petition requires certification of assistance from law enforcement.
