The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has expanded its Partnership with Social Security Administration (SSA)! Applicants filing for lawful permanent resident status will soon be able to apply for their Social Security Number (SSN) or replacement card as part of the adjustment of status application process, Form I-485. USCIS is in the process of revising Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status to include the additional questions needed to apply for an SSN or a replacement card.

USCIS Director, Ur M. Jaddou stated, “This expansion of our partnership with the Social Security Administration illustrates our commitment to operating our nation’s immigration system more efficiently to save applicants time,”

On Tuesday, August 3, 2021, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they were designating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Haiti for 18 months, from August 3, 2021 until February 3, 2023. This designation of TPS is based upon ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary conditions in Haiti making return un-safe.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS.gov) announced on Monday, July 19th that they have extended and re-designated Somalia for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months! They will be publishing a Federal Register Notice (FRN) extending and re-designating Somalia for TPS for 18 months, from September 18, 2021, through March 17, 2023.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas stated, “Through the extension and re-designation of Somalia for Temporary Protected Status, the United States will be able to offer safety and protection to Somalis who may not be able to return to their country, due to ongoing conflict and a worsening humanitarian crisis,”!

The American Immigration Council (AIC) has released all fifty states and the District of Columbia, for a total of fifty-one updated state-by-state fact sheets highlighting immigration data and facts. These fact sheets highlight the demographic and economic impact of Immigrants in each state.

With national immigration policy being discussed, we thought that it would be a good time to provide some statistics on the Immigrant population in the United States as provided by this AIC research. Once a week we will be posting a blog with information on three states at a time. This week we will highlight; North Carolina, North Dakota and Ohio!

The AIC has compiled research which shows that Immigrants are an essential part of each of these states’ economy, labor force and tax base. As our economy continues to grow, Immigrants and their children are a growing economic and political force as consumers, taxpayers and entrepreneurs. As United States economic continues to grow, immigrants and their children will continue to play a key role in shaping the economic and political future of each of these states.
