The White House, Biden Administration has expressed to members of Congress that they are open to a new border expulsion law, mandatory detention and increasing deportations! This is all being done to get congressional Republicans to back President Biden’s aid to Ukraine which is in the same spending bill. This bill also includes aid to Israel!
Some of the most worrying ideas that are under consideration are:
- Prohibiting entry into the U.S. and effectively “shutting down the border” to most noncitizens.
- Eliminating DHS’ authority to release people from detention and mandating detention of nearly all people.
- Arrests and expulsion of noncitizens in the interior of the country under expanded expedited removal and no access to a hearing.
On their own, each of these bad ideas are due process, human rights, and operational nightmares. These dangerous immigration proposals would do grave, irreparable harm to the U.S. asylum system while creating chaos under the guise of securing the border.
